We are currently in the midst of a global pandemic, and it is more important now than ever that we have a heightened awareness of our homes and their levels of cleanliness.

Coronavirus can be spread in tiny droplets released from the nose and mouth of an infected person as they cough.

For this reason, it’s important for our own safety that we keep our homes clean, paying particular attention to the surfaces that we touch daily.

6 simple things you can do to make sure your home is as safe and clean as it can be:

  1. Clean and disinfect the surfaces you touch regularly.

Don’t forget, doorknobs, fridge doors, light switches, faucets, kitchen appliances and counters are among the most regularly used parts of the home.

It’s important to note the difference between cleaning and disinfecting. Cleaning involves just soap and water, whereas disinfection requires the use of a sanitisation spray.

It is advised that you disinfect surfaces with 62-71% alcohol, or 0.5% hydrogen peroxide bleach or household bleach containing 0.1% sodium hypochlorite.

  1. Sanitize your devices.

Your phones, television remotes, gaming consoles and laptops are all most likely bacteria-ridden and must be sanitized correctly. This is especially necessary for smartphones, which are often like an extension of our body, and are most likely to come outside with us where the virus could get on its surface. We constantly handle these, so don’t forget to wipe it down with an alcohol solution after every outing.

  1. Keep your clothes clean.

This is particularly important if you’re still going out to work each day, and more important again if you are using public transportation. It may not be the most eco-friendly setting, but for now, try to wash your clothes at the highest temperature possible. When it’s dry, try to leave it to dry rather than shaking it, as dust and bacterial particles can spread through the air.

  1. Clean your sofas and carpets.

Your carpets, curtains and other upholstery harbour bacteria, which can pose health risks, especially in times like these. You’re probably spending more time than ever at home, so your carpet will be getting more use now than before. Carpets and sofas are difficult to clean properly yourself, so if it is possible, it’s well worth hiring a professional to do this for you.

  1. Wash your hands as often as you can.

This may sound obvious, but it’s vital that we keep our own hands clean. COVID-19 can be transmitted by touching our mouths, noses and eyes after we touch a surface that has been infected. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, after coughing or sneezing, before and after eating and after using the restroom. Also, avoid touching your face at all times when you are outside the home or have yet to wash your hands.

  1. Consider getting a professional cleaner in once a week – especially if you still have to leave home often.

It doesn’t matter how vigilant we are – we don’t have the eye of a professional. You’d be surprised how many areas professional cleaners can spot that are not only dusty, but may be transmitting bacteria. A professional will combat the cleaning fatigue we are all feeling – let’s face it, we aren’t doing the job we were when the outbreak first affected us.
